The long-awaited 2023 midrange smartphones (A34 5G and A54 5G) have now been officially announced by Samsung earlier today (March 15, 2023) and they will be available for purchase before the end of the month.
This announcement just confirmed what I have assumed for months now about the A74 5G. For years now, new A3x, A5x, and A7x series smartphones have been launched together. But now, we have the A3x and A5x only.
Samsung Galaxy A34 5G
Samsung A34 5G is a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display smartphone with 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution, 390 PPI pixel density, 120Hz high refresh rate, and a Vision Booster.
It is equipped with an IP67 dust and water-resistant. The front which is essentially its display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 while the back and frame are made out of plastic material.
Samsung A34 5G is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 1080 processor which has Mali-G68 MC4 GPU on board. It is equipped with 6GB and 8GB RAM options as well as 128GB and 256GB internal storage options.
There is an SD card space but it is a shared space that gives you the option to use either two SIM cards or one SIM card and one SD card. It supports an SD card of up to 1TB. It has single and dual nano sim variants.
Samsung A34 5G runs on One UI 5.1 that was debuted on the S23 series based on Android 13 OS.
Users of this smartphone will be getting 4 years of OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates which is what the S23 family (flagships) will be getting.
It has three cameras at the rear which comprise a 48MP main camera with OIS, 8MP ultrawide camera, and 5MP macro camera. Its front-facing camera is 13MP.
You can shoot up to 4K videos at 30 fps on both its front and back cameras.
It is packed with a non-removable 5000 mAh Li-Po battery with 25 watts of fast-wired charging support. There is no support for wireless and reverse wireless charging.
It is equipped with an optical, under-display fingerprint sensor. Samsung A34 5G is available in Lime, Graphite, Silver, and Violet colors.
Samsung Galaxy A54 5G
Samsung A54 5G is a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display smartphone featuring 2340 x 1080 pixels screen resolution, 403 PPI pixel density, Vision Booster, 1000 nits of peak brightness, and a 120Hz high refresh rate.
It has a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection on both the front and the back while the frame is plastic.
It is equipped with an IP67 dust and water resistant which means it can survive up to 1 meter deep water for up to 30 minutes. This does not mean you should submerge it in water.
Samsung A54 5G is powered by an Exynos 1380 processor with Mali-G68 MP5 GPU. This is a faster and more powerful processor than the Exynos 1280 on the A53 5G.
Its processing power is supported by 6GB and 8GB RAM options as well as 128GB and 256GB internal storage options.
There is an SD card space that supports up to 1TB of external or expandable storage. But it is a hybrid/shared space which means it can use two SIM cards or one SIM card and an SD card at a time.
It runs on One UI 5.1 based on Android 13. A54 5G will be getting 4 years of OS upgrades which means its users will be getting Android 17 and will also get 5 years of security updates.
Samsung A54 5G is equipped with a 50MP primary camera with OIS, 12MP ultrawide, and 5MP macro camera while its front-facing camera is 32MP. Both its front and back cameras can shoot 4K videos at 30fps.
This will be a better camera system than the one on the A53 5G thanks to its better OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and VDIS (Video Digital Image Stabilization).
This allows the A54 5G to shoot sharper and more detailed videos and take better pictures than the A53 5G regardless of lighting conditions.
It is packed with a non-removable 5000 mAh battery and supports up to 25 watts of fast-wired charging. There is no support for wireless and reverse wireless charging.
Thanks to its more efficient processor compared to its predecessor, the A54 5G battery is expected to last much longer than the one on the A53 5G.
It is available in Lime, White, Graphite, and Violet colors.
Samsung A54 5G and A34 5G have virtually the same display with the exception of screen size, the same 5000 mAh battery capacity with 25 watts charging, and weighs almost the same as A34 5G at 199 grams and A54 5G at 202 grams.
They are both equipped with IP67 dust and water-resistant and are available in 6GB and 8GB RAM as well as 128GB and 256GB storage options.
They differ in processing power and camera. Also slightly in design because the A34 5G uses an Infinity-U display while the A54 5G uses an Infinity-O display.
According to Samsung in a Press Release, "Users can also now remove unwanted shadows and reflections for the first time in Galaxy A series, thanks to the enhanced editing tools."
Users of these two midrange phones can get 100GB of cloud storage which will help them to easily back up photos to OneDrive with a six-month trial of Microsoft 365 Basic.
Both devices use a display with Vision Booster which improves brightness and color accuracy based on the lighting condition of the environment you are currently in.
Both devices will be available in most countries by the end of this month but will most likely make their first stop in Europe and Asia. Below are the prices of the A34 and A54 in Europe.
Samsung A34 5G will start at EUR 390 for the 6GB/128GB up to EUR 460 for the 8GB/256GB. The Galaxy A54 5G on the other hand will start at EUR 490 for the 6GB/128GB up to EUR 550 for the 8GB/256GB.
